Thyroglobulin antibody, often abbreviated as TgAb, is an autoantibody directed against thyroglobulin. Thyroglobulin is a protein produced by the thyroid gland that plays a crucial role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The presence of thyroglobulin antibodies in the blood is a common finding in autoimmune thyroid diseases.

The most frequently observed conditions associated with elevated thyroglobulin antibody levels include Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, leading to hypothyroidism. It is also frequently found in Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition that causes hyperthyroidism. In some individuals, high levels of TgAb can be present even without overt thyroid dysfunction, which may indicate an increased risk of developing thyroid disease in the future.

Measuring thyroglobulin antibodies is typically done through blood tests. While the presence of TgAb does not definitively diagnose a specific thyroid condition on its own, it is a valuable marker for identifying autoimmune thyroid disease. In some cases, TgAb can interfere with the measurement of thyroglobulin itself, a tumor marker used to monitor thyroid cancer recurrence.
