Thrustförkastningar are a type of geological fault characterized by the hanging wall moving up and over the footwall due to compressional forces. This contrasts with normal faults where the hanging wall moves down. Thrust faults are a specific type of reverse fault where the dip angle of the fault plane is relatively shallow, typically less than 45 degrees. In some classifications, thrust faults are defined with even shallower dips, around 30 degrees or less. The compressional stress that creates thrust faults is often associated with tectonic plate collisions, such as those occurring at convergent plate boundaries.

These faults are significant features in mountain-building processes, known as orogenesis. As tectonic plates collide, the crust is shortened and thickened, leading to the formation of large thrust fault systems. These systems can involve multiple stacked thrust sheets, where large blocks of rock are pushed over one another. Examples of areas with extensive thrust faulting include the Himalayas, the Alps, and the Rocky Mountains. The deformation associated with thrust faults can also lead to the folding of rock layers and the emplacement of large igneous intrusions. Understanding thrust faults is crucial for interpreting the geological history of mountain ranges, assessing seismic hazards, and exploring for mineral and hydrocarbon resources, as they can create traps for oil and gas.
