Throughline, in narrative theory, refers to the central, continuous thread that runs through a story, linking scenes, characters, and motifs to create a coherent whole. The term is used across literature, film, television, and educational contexts to denote the primary objective, question, or motif that persists across acts, chapters, or units.

In fiction, the throughline often centers on a protagonist’s goal or a unifying mystery; subplots may arise, but they should support or echo the throughline. In screenwriting and television, the throughline is sometimes described as the spine of the story, around which the narrative structure is organized. It can be a concrete objective, such as solving a case or achieving a personal achievement, or a thematic pursuit that guides character and plot development.

In education, throughlines refer to enduring understandings or cross-curricular themes that run through multiple units or courses, helping students connect learning across contexts. In branding and journalism, a throughline is a consistent overarching idea or message that appears across pieces to maintain coherence and audience resonance.

Relation to other concepts: a throughline is distinct from a plot, which is the sequence of events, and from theme, which is the underlying idea or message. The throughline supports the plot and can reflect or express the theme, often by highlighting a central question or objective that characters pursue over time.
