Thru-dyeing, also known as through-dyeing or pigment dyeing, is a textile coloration process where the dye penetrates the entire cross-section of the fiber, yarn, or fabric. This is in contrast to surface dyeing, where the color is primarily applied to the exterior of the material. The objective of thru-dyeing is to achieve a uniform and deep coloration that is resistant to fading and washing.

The process typically involves immersing the material in a dye bath containing the coloring agent. The dye molecules are then allowed to diffuse into the material under controlled conditions of temperature, time, and chemical auxiliaries. For fibers, this can occur before spinning into yarn. For yarns, it happens before weaving or knitting. Fabrics can also undergo thru-dyeing after they have been constructed. Different types of dyes are used depending on the fiber composition, including reactive dyes for cotton and cellulose-based fibers, acid dyes for wool and silk, and disperse dyes for synthetic fibers like polyester.

The benefits of thru-dyeing include excellent colorfastness, both to washing and light, and a more consistent color throughout the material. This makes thru-dyed textiles suitable for applications where durability and longevity of color are important, such as apparel, upholstery, and technical textiles. However, the process can sometimes be more energy-intensive and may require more specialized equipment compared to some surface dyeing techniques. The depth of shade achievable can also be a significant advantage in achieving vibrant and saturated colors.
