Thermostatlike is an adjective used in engineering and biology to describe a mechanism, device, or process that regulates a controlled variable to maintain a desired value, in a manner analogous to a thermostat. A thermostatlike system integrates measurement, a reference or setpoint, and a means of influence on the process to reduce deviation from the setpoint.

A typical thermostatlike arrangement includes a sensor that monitors the variable, a comparator or control logic that determines the required action based on the difference between the measured value and the setpoint, and an actuator or influence channel that alters the system to bring the variable back toward the target. Control strategies range from simple on–off (bang-bang) action with deadband to continuous proportional or PID control. The design emphasizes reliability, stability, and rapid settling without excessive oscillation.

Applications span many domains. In buildings, HVAC thermostats regulate temperature; in biology, homeostatic processes act thermostatlike to maintain internal conditions; in industry, process controllers maintain pressure, temperature, or composition; in manufacturing and 3D printing, temperature regulation of a nozzle or bath is critical. The concept also covers nonthermal targets such as humidity, pH, or electrical current through analogous feedback loops.

Limitations include sensor lag, noise, and delays that can cause overshoot or sustained oscillations. Proper calibration, appropriate control parameters, and, when desirable, lag compensation help achieve robust performance. The term is descriptive and widely used to convey the presence of feedback-based regulation rather than designating a specific standard or algorithm.
