Thermostaten are devices that regulate temperature by monitoring the ambient environment and controlling heating or cooling systems to maintain a user-defined temperature. They compare a measured temperature with a setpoint and adjust energy delivery accordingly to keep conditions within a desired range.

They come in a range of designs, from simple mechanical models to modern digital and smart units. Common types include mechanical bimetallic or capillary thermostats, electric digital thermostats, programmable thermostats, and smart thermostats that connect to networks and apps.

Operation can be on/off or variable. On/off thermostats switch equipment fully on or off once the temperature crosses the setpoint. More advanced systems use proportional, proportional-integral, or other control algorithms (PID) to modulate output for smoother results. Sensing elements include bimetal strips, thermistors, or resistance temperature detectors (RTDs).

Applications span residential heating and hot-water systems, air conditioning, and some industrial processes that require consistent temperature control. In homes, thermostaten contribute to comfort and energy efficiency by preventing unnecessary heating or cooling.

Historically, thermostats originated in the 19th century with mechanical devices; digital and electronic variants emerged in the 20th century, and smart thermostats gained prominence in the 2010s. Modern models offer scheduling, remote access, energy-use data, and integration with other smart devices.

Thermostats are designed to be compatible with a variety of HVAC equipment and are subject to electrical safety standards and energy-efficiency programs in different regions.
