The goal is to transform text into structured insights such as topics, sentiment, trends, or relationships. The field has evolved with advances in machine learning and deep learning, enabling scalable analysis of large corpora.

Core techniques include text preprocessing (tokenization, normalization, stop-word removal, stemming and lemmatization), linguistic analysis (part-of-speech tagging, syntactic parsing, named entity recognition), and representation methods (bag-of-words, TF-IDF, word embeddings, contextual embeddings). Analytical tasks include sentiment analysis, information extraction, topic modeling, document classification, and clustering. Evaluation uses metrics like accuracy, precision, recall, F1, and, for information extraction, entity-level metrics. Tools and libraries provide pipelines to build and deploy models.

Applications span customer experience, market research, brand monitoring, security and compliance, healthcare informatics, and academic research. Challenges include language variability, ambiguity, sarcasm, domain adaptation, data quality, and privacy. The field continues to trend toward transformer-based models and multilingual NLP, with emphasis on explainability, bias mitigation, and reproducibility.
