Tetthetsgradienten is a term used in some German-language contexts to denote the spatial gradient of density in a medium. More commonly, this quantity is called the density gradient and is represented mathematically by the vector field ∇ρ, where ρ(x, t) is the mass density.

Mathematically, in Cartesian coordinates, ∇ρ = (∂ρ/∂x, ∂ρ/∂y, ∂ρ/∂z). The magnitude |∇ρ| describes how rapidly density changes with position, while the direction of ∇ρ points toward increasing density. The units of the gradient are kilograms per cubic meter per meter, commonly expressed as kg/m^4.

Physical significance of density gradients lies in their influence on buoyancy and transport in fluids and other media. In stratified environments such as the Earth's atmosphere and oceans, vertical density gradients, arising from temperature, salinity, or composition differences, determine stability, circulation patterns, and mixing.
