Ter­mostatet, the definite form of thermostat in Danish and Norwegian, is a device that senses ambient temperature and regulates heating or cooling equipment to maintain a user-set temperature. It is a key component in climate control for homes, offices, and many appliances.

Most ter­mostater work by comparing the sensed temperature to a setpoint and then activating a controller that switches the connected equipment on or off. Many domestic models use on/off (two-position) control, which turns heating or cooling fully on or fully off when the temperature deviates from the setpoint. Some advanced units implement proportional, proportional–integral, or other control methods to modulate output and reduce temperature fluctuations.

Types include mechanical and electronic ter­mostater. Mechanical models typically rely on a bimetallic strip or a gas-filled element to change contacts as temperature changes. Electronic models use sensors such as thermistors or RTDs and a microcontroller to determine when to activate the actuator. Digital and smart ter­mostaters add programmable schedules, remote control, connectivity to home networks, and, in some cases, learning algorithms to adapt to user habits.

Common components are the temperature sensor, the control circuit or microcontroller, and an actuator such as a relay or transistor that drives the heating or cooling device. User interfaces range from simple dials to touchscreens and mobile apps.

Applications span residential heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and some industrial processes. Benefits include improved comfort and energy efficiency, while challenges can involve sensor placement, calibration drift, and maintenance requirements.
