Thermostatic radiator valves, often referred to as TRVs or "termostaattipää" in Finnish, are devices fitted to radiators that control the temperature of a room. They automatically adjust the flow of hot water into the radiator, thereby regulating the room's temperature and preventing overheating. This allows for individual temperature control in different rooms, leading to greater comfort and energy savings compared to a central heating system without them.

A thermostatic radiator valve consists of a valve body and a thermostatic head. The thermostatic head contains a sensor that reacts to the ambient room temperature. This sensor typically uses a wax or liquid-filled element that expands or contracts with changes in temperature. When the room reaches the desired temperature, the element expands and pushes a pin within the valve, which in turn closes or restricts the flow of hot water to the radiator. As the room cools, the element contracts, retracting the pin and allowing more hot water to flow, thus reheating the room.

TRVs are usually marked with a numbered scale, typically from 1 to 5. Each number corresponds to a specific temperature setting. For example, a setting of 2 might correspond to a room temperature of around 18-20 degrees Celsius, while a setting of 5 could be around 25-28 degrees Celsius. A setting of '*' or '0' usually indicates that the valve is fully open, or that the heating is off but frost protection is still active.

Installing and using thermostatic radiator valves correctly can contribute significantly to reducing household energy consumption and lowering heating bills. They are a common and effective way to optimize home heating efficiency and comfort.
