Terminalstyrt is a term used to describe systems or devices that are guided or controlled primarily during the terminal phase, the final portion of a trajectory or process. In Norwegian usage the term is often found in defense technology, where a weapon or sensor-based system performs corrections near the target to improve accuracy in the last moments before impact.

Historically and technically, terminal guidance refers to the methods by which a munition or autonomous platform acquires the target and applies steering commands in the final stage of flight. This contrasts with earlier phases such as boost or midcourse guidance, which establish a general trajectory. Terminalstyrt solutions aim to compensate for disturbances, evasive maneuvers by the target, and countermeasures, with the goal of higher hit probability.

Technologies used for terminal guidance are diverse. They include imaging infrared and visible light seekers, electro-optical sensors, laser designators and semi-active or active guidance, radar homing, and sensor fusion algorithms that process real-time data to command course corrections. The choice of modality depends on factors such as target type, environmental conditions, and the desired balance between accuracy, cost, and counter-countermeasures.

Beyond military applications, the concept of terminal-stage control appears in other fields, such as robotics and automated manufacturing, where final-position adjustments are made to ensure precision and alignment at the end of a process. In policy and ethics discussions, terminalstyrt weapons are often considered within broader debates on arms control, international law, and the risks of escalation.
