Tereftalaattia is the Finnish word for terephthalate. Terephthalates are salts or esters of terephthalic acid, a dicarboxylic acid. The most common and commercially significant terephthalate is dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), an ester of terephthalic acid and methanol. Another important terephthalate is bis(2-hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET), which is a monomer used in the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
