Temporomandibulaarisen refers to the temporomandibular joint, commonly known as the TMJ. This is a hinge-like joint that connects the lower jawbone (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull, located just in front of the ears. The TMJ is a complex anatomical structure that allows for a wide range of jaw movements, including opening and closing the mouth, chewing, and speaking. It consists of the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone and the head of the mandibular condyle, separated by an articular disc. Muscles of mastication control the movement of the TMJ.

Disorders affecting this joint and the surrounding muscles are collectively known as temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Symptoms of TMDs can vary widely and may include pain in the jaw joint and muscles of the face, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, difficulty chewing, and locking of the jaw. The causes of TMDs are not always clear but can be related to bruxism (teeth grinding or clenching), arthritis, trauma to the jaw, or stress. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination and sometimes imaging studies. Treatment approaches range from conservative measures like pain medication and lifestyle adjustments to more invasive interventions such as physical therapy, dental splints, or surgery in severe cases.
