The telogen phase, often referred to as the resting phase, is the final stage of the hair growth cycle. Following the anagen (growth) and catagen (transition) phases, telogen represents a period of dormancy for individual hair follicles. During this stage, the hair shaft has detached from the dermal papilla, the structure that nourishes the hair root, and is essentially inactive. The hair itself remains in the follicle, anchored, but no longer growing. This phase is typically shorter than the anagen phase, lasting approximately two to four months in humans.
