Teleskoobitüüpidel refer to the different designs and principles by which telescopes are constructed and operate. The primary categories of optical telescopes are refractors and reflectors. Refracting telescopes use lenses to gather and focus light. These lenses, typically a large objective lens at the front of the tube, bend light rays to a focal point. While historically significant and producing sharp images, large refractors can be expensive to manufacture, suffer from chromatic aberration (where different colors of light focus at slightly different points), and their weight can cause sagging.

Reflecting telescopes, on the other hand, use mirrors to collect and focus light. The most common design employs a primary concave mirror at the rear of the tube that reflects incoming light to a secondary mirror, which then directs the light to an eyepiece or detector. Reflectors are generally more cost-effective for larger apertures, do not suffer from chromatic aberration, and can be built with larger mirrors than lenses. However, they can be susceptible to obstruction by the secondary mirror and require periodic mirror alignment.

Beyond these fundamental types, there are hybrid designs like catadioptric telescopes, which combine both lenses and mirrors. Examples include Schmidt-Cassegrain and Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes. These designs offer compact tubes and a good balance of optical quality for their size. The choice of telescope type depends on factors such as intended use, budget, portability requirements, and the specific astronomical objects to be observed. Different types excel at different tasks, from wide-field celestial surveys to detailed observation of planetary surfaces.
