A telescoop, also called a telescope, is an optical instrument designed to observe distant objects by gathering light and forming an enlarged image or signal. By collecting more light than the naked eye and improving angular resolution, a telescoop enables observations of faint or small details that would otherwise be invisible.

Optical designs fall mainly into three categories. Refracting telescopes use lenses to bend and focus light; they have long, straight tubes and are common in small amateur instruments. Reflecting telescopes use mirrors to collect and focus light, offering large apertures with fewer optical distortions and avoiding chromatic aberration. Catadioptric designs combine lenses and mirrors to balance compactness and performance.

Beyond optical light, telescopes operate across the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio telescopes use large antennas to detect radio waves, while infrared, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray telescopes require specialized optics and detectors or operate in space to avoid atmospheric absorption.

Key performance factors include aperture, the diameter of the objective or primary mirror, which determines light-gathering power and resolution; focal length, which affects image scale; and the quality of optics. Magnification depends on the eyepiece or detector and is not a fixed property of the telescope itself. Mounts, such as alt-azimuth or equatorial designs, provide stability and tracking to follow objects as the sky moves.

History centers on early 17th-century innovations attributed to Hans Lippershey and Galileo, followed by Isaac Newton’s development of the reflecting telescope and subsequent optical advances. Today, large ground-based observatories and space telescopes, such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope, study planets, stars, galaxies, and the cosmos, while radio arrays and interferometric techniques enhance resolution beyond single-aperture capabilities.
