Telegrafist is a term historically used to refer to a person who operates a telegraph. Telegraphy is a system of transmitting messages by means of electrical signals sent over a wire. The telegrafist's primary role was to encode messages into a series of electrical pulses, typically using Morse code, and transmit them to a receiving telegrafist. The receiving telegrafist would then decode these pulses back into a readable message.

This profession was vital during the 19th and early 20th centuries, facilitating rapid long-distance communication for governments, businesses, and individuals. Telegrafists needed to possess good typing skills, knowledge of telegraphic codes, and the ability to quickly and accurately send and receive messages.
