Tekutinám refers to fluids in Slovak and Czech languages. A fluid is a substance that continually deforms under an applied shear stress, or external force. Fluids are a subset of the states of matter and include liquids, gases, and plasmas.

Liquids have a definite volume but no fixed shape. They take the shape of their container. Gases have no definite volume and no fixed shape; they expand to fill their container. Plasmas are ionized gases that conduct electricity and respond to magnetic fields.

The study of fluids is known as fluid mechanics, which is divided into fluid statics (the study of fluids at rest) and fluid dynamics (the study of fluids in motion). Key properties of fluids include viscosity, density, and surface tension. Viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to flow. Density is mass per unit volume. Surface tension is the tendency of liquid surfaces to shrink into the minimum surface area possible.

Examples of fluids are water, air, oil, and mercury. Fluids are essential for many natural phenomena and technological applications, such as weather patterns, blood circulation in living organisms, and the operation of hydraulic systems.
