Tektite-related refers to tektites and the broader study of these natural glasses formed by terrestrial impact events. Tektites are created when a large meteorite or comet impact melts surface rocks and ejects molten material high into the atmosphere. As the droplets cool rapidly while traveling through air and water, they solidify into glassy bodies ranging from tiny droplets to larger, irregular masses that can travel considerable distances from the impact site.

Most tektites are silica-rich glass with varied trace-element compositions that reflect their parent rocks. They are typically colorless, brown, green, or black, and often show a smooth or teardrop-like morphology in splash-form specimens. Some larger pieces are known as macrotektites, while the finest forms are termed microtektites. The glass may exhibit vesicles, weathering rims, and crossword-like textures resulting from rapid quenching.

Globally, tektites occur in recognized strewn fields. The largest is the Australasian tektite field, spanning parts of Australia and Southeast Asia. Central European tektites include the Moldavite, a green glass from the Czech Republic area. North American tektites include varieties such as Bediasites from Texas, among others. The distribution and composition of tektites help researchers identify impact events and correlate geological strata.

Tektites are important in geology and planetary science for studying impact processes, glass formation, and age dating through associated matrices. They are collected by researchers and lay observers alike, though authentication can require geochemical analysis to distinguish natural tektites from glassy impostors.
