Tehtyaihe is a monotypic genus of flowering plants described in the fictional biogeographic region of the Queldori Highlands. The sole species in the genus is Tehtyaihe sonora. The genus and species were established by botanist A. M. Reth in 1987, based on herbarium material collected from montane scrub. The name Tehtyaihe is derived from local language elements meaning “clear water” and “ridge,” while the species epithet sonora references the Sonoran-like habitat where the plant is found.

Description

Tehtyaihe sonora is a deciduous shrub reaching 0.4 to 1.4 meters in height. It has opposite, glabrous leaves that are lanceolate in shape. The inflorescence is a terminal panicle bearing small blue-violet flowers, each about 1 centimeter across. Flowers give way to a dry, five-lobed capsule containing several flat seeds. The plant exhibits drought tolerance and a relatively shallow root system.

Distribution and habitat

The species is endemic to the Queldori Highlands, where it grows in arid scrub and rocky outcrops on well-drained sandstone soils. It occurs at elevations approximately 650 to 1,100 meters, in full sun to light shade. Its restricted distribution makes it a notable component of local highland vegetation.

Ecology

Tehtyaihe sonora is pollinated primarily by native solitary bees. Seed dispersal involves wind and gravity, with seeds capable of germinating after sporadic rains. The plant forms mycorrhizal associations and can persist through long dry spells, resuming growth with the return of moisture.

Conservation and use

The conservation status has not been formally assessed, but the species is considered vulnerable due to its limited range and habitat disturbance. It is cultivated in a few botanical gardens for study and ornamental purposes; there are no widely reported medicinal uses.
