In big-endian systems, the most significant byte is stored at the smallest memory address, and the least significant byte is stored at the largest. Conversely, in little-endian systems, the least significant byte is stored at the smallest memory address, and the most significant byte is stored at the largest. For example, consider the hexadecimal number 0x12345678. In big-endian order, it would be stored as 0x12 0x34 0x56 0x78, while in little-endian order, it would be stored as 0x78 0x56 0x34 0x12.

The choice of byte order can impact software performance and compatibility, especially when data is transferred between systems with different byte orders. To address this, protocols and data formats often specify a byte order, such as network byte order (big-endian) used in internet protocols. Additionally, some systems and programming languages provide functions to convert between different byte orders, ensuring data integrity across diverse platforms.
