Materials used for tavoli range from traditional wood to modern composites. Wood remains prevalent, often finished or veneered; alternative tops may be glass, metal, stone, or engineered materials. The frame or legs may be wood, steel, or other metals. Tops are frequently treated to resist heat, scratches, and stains, and may include protective pads or mats.

In everyday culture, expressions such as apparecchiare la tavola (to lay the table) reflect its central role in daily life. The term is also used metaphorically in contexts like tavolo delle trattative or tavolo di negoziazione to denote a setting for negotiation or formal discussion.

Care and maintenance depend on materials: wood surfaces may require conditioning or gentle cleaners; glass tops benefit from non-abrasive cleaners; metal parts may need rust protection or lubrication. Avoid placing hot objects directly on sensitive finishes unless a protective layer is used.
