tasopinta

Tasopinta is a mathematical concept referring to a flat, two-dimensional surface that extends without curvature in three-dimensional space. In Finnish mathematics and technical contexts, the term is used to describe the planar subset of space on which any two points can be connected by a straight line lying entirely on the surface.

In three-dimensional space, a plane can be defined in several equivalent ways. It can be described by a point and a normal vector, as all points r on the plane satisfy n · (r − r0) = 0, where n is the plane’s normal and r0 is a known point on the plane. Equivalently, a plane can be given by a linear equation ax + by + cz + d = 0. A plane is uniquely determined by three non-collinear points; conversely, any line lying in the plane is the intersection of the plane with another plane.

Key properties include the absence of curvature, infinite extent in its two dimensions, and the possibility of being parallel or intersecting other planes. If two planes intersect, their intersection is a line. The distance from a point to a plane and the foot of the perpendicular are common concepts in plane geometry. In higher dimensions, the analogous object is a hyperplane, defined by a linear equation a1x1 + … + anxn + b = 0 and having dimension n−1.
