Tarbimisühiskonnaks, also known as a consumer society, is a socioeconomic order that encourages the acquisition of goods and services in ever-increasing amounts. This societal model is characterized by the widespread availability of mass-produced goods, accessible credit, and effective marketing and advertising strategies that often cultivate artificial desires rather than fulfilling genuine needs. In a consumer society, economic growth is frequently linked to increased consumption, and individual identity and social status can become strongly associated with the possessions one owns.

The development of the consumer society is often attributed to industrialization, which allowed for mass production and lower prices, making goods accessible to a broader population. Post-World War II economic booms in many Western countries further accelerated this trend, fueled by rising disposable incomes and the expansion of consumer credit. Media, particularly television and later the internet, have played a significant role in shaping consumer culture by promoting lifestyles centered around material acquisition.

Critics of the consumer society often point to its negative environmental impacts, such as resource depletion, pollution, and waste generation. Socially, concerns include the potential for increased inequality, the promotion of materialism, and the psychological effects of constant pressure to consume. The emphasis on acquiring new goods can also lead to planned obsolescence, where products are designed to have a limited lifespan, encouraging frequent replacement. Despite these criticisms, consumer societies remain a dominant economic and cultural force globally, influencing production, employment, and individual lifestyles.
