Talajösszetev is a Hungarian term that translates to "soil component" or "soil constituent." It refers to any of the individual materials that make up a soil. These components are broadly categorized into inorganic and organic matter, along with water and air.

Inorganic soil components primarily consist of mineral particles derived from the weathering of rocks. These are classified by size into sand, silt, and clay. Sand particles are the largest, feeling gritty to the touch. Silt particles are finer than sand but larger than clay, with a smooth or floury feel. Clay particles are the smallest and have a sticky feel when wet and a hard, cloddy texture when dry. The relative proportions of these mineral particles determine the soil's texture, which significantly influences its drainage, aeration, and water-holding capacity.

Organic soil components, collectively known as humus, are derived from the decomposition of plant and animal residues. This organic matter plays a crucial role in soil fertility, improving soil structure, water retention, and nutrient availability. Decomposed organic matter contributes to the dark color often seen in fertile soils.

Water and air occupy the pore spaces between the solid soil particles. Soil water is essential for plant growth, acting as a solvent for nutrients and facilitating their uptake by roots. Soil air provides oxygen necessary for the respiration of plant roots and soil organisms. The balance between water and air in the soil pores is critical for healthy soil function.
