Tõstejõuna, a term originating from Estonian, directly translates to "lifting force" or "buoyant force" in English. This physical principle describes the upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object. When an object is placed in a fluid, whether it be a liquid or a gas, the fluid exerts pressure on all sides of the object. Due to the nature of fluids, the pressure increases with depth. This means the pressure exerted on the bottom of the object is greater than the pressure exerted on its top. The difference in these pressures creates a net upward force, which is the tõstejõuna.

This concept is famously articulated by Archimedes' principle, which states that the buoyant force on an object submerged in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. If the tõstejõuna is greater than the object's weight, the object will float. If the tõstejõuna is less than the object's weight, the object will sink. If the forces are equal, the object will remain suspended at its current depth. Tõstejõuna is a fundamental concept in hydrostatics and plays a crucial role in understanding phenomena such as why ships float, how hot air balloons rise, and the behavior of submarines.
