In the context of aviation, this force is primarily generated by wings, which are shaped to create a difference in air pressure above and below them. As air moves faster over the curved upper surface of a wing than the flatter lower surface, it results in lower pressure above and higher pressure below, creating lift. Jet engines and propeller-driven engines provide the thrust to move air over the wings at sufficient speeds.

For lighter-than-air vehicles like balloons and airships, buoyancy is the dominant principle. These craft utilize a lifting gas, such as helium or hot air, which is less dense than the surrounding air. According to Archimedes' principle, the buoyant force exerted on the object is equal to the weight of the air displaced by the object. If the weight of the lifting gas and the vehicle is less than the weight of the displaced air, an upward force is generated, causing the craft to ascend.
