Tõeväärtus is an Estonian term that translates to "truth value" in English. It is a fundamental concept in logic and mathematics, referring to the truth or falsity of a proposition or statement. In classical logic, a proposition can only have one of two truth values: true or false. This principle is known as the law of the excluded middle, which states that a proposition must either be true or false, with no intermediate possibility.

The concept of truth values is crucial for evaluating logical arguments and constructing complex logical expressions. For example, in propositional logic, compound statements are formed by combining simpler statements using logical connectives such as "and" (konjunktsoon), "or" (disjunktsoon), and "not" (negaatsioon). The truth value of a compound statement is determined by the truth values of its constituent simple statements and the specific logical connective used. Truth tables are often employed to systematically illustrate these relationships.

Beyond classical logic, there are other systems of logic, such as fuzzy logic and multi-valued logic, that allow for truth values other than just true and false. Fuzzy logic, for instance, assigns degrees of truth between 0 and 1, representing varying levels of certainty or vagueness. However, in standard logical contexts, the binary distinction of true and false remains the prevailing understanding of tõeväärtus.
