Süvendustööd (dredging works) are activities that remove sediments from the bottom of water bodies to deepen or maintain navigable depths. They are carried out to ensure safe and efficient waterways, enable harbor and channel construction or expansion, and support coastal protection or land reclamation projects. In practice, süvendustööd are used for harbor maintenance, channel deepening, and environmental restoration where sediment accumulation reduces waterway capacity.

Procedures and approaches: Süvendustööd can be performed using mechanical dredging or hydraulic dredging. Mechanical dredging employs bucket excavators or trailing equipment to physically scoop material from the seabed, while hydraulic dredging uses suction or cutter-head dredgers to dislodge and pump sediment through pipelines to disposal sites or placement areas.

Handling of dredged material: The material removed during süvendustööd, known as spoil, may be transported to designated offshore or onshore disposal sites, used for beach nourishment, land reclamation, or habitat creation, depending on its composition and regulatory approvals. Contaminated or environmentally sensitive sediments require special handling and treatment.

Planning and regulation: Dredging projects typically require environmental impact assessments, water-use permits, and harbor or municipal approvals. Monitoring and mitigation measures address turbidity, benthic habitats, and sediment quality, and operations must comply with national and regional environmental and safety standards.
