A sünkromehhanism, often referred to as a synchronizer ring or synchro ring, is a crucial component in manual transmissions, particularly in automotive applications. Its primary function is to enable smooth and effortless gear changes by ensuring that the speed of the gear to be engaged matches the speed of the mainshaft before the engagement sleeve actually meshes. This process prevents the jarring and grinding noises commonly associated with poorly synchronized gear changes.

The sünkromehhanism typically consists of a sleeve, a hub, and one or more synchro rings. The hub is splined to the mainshaft, and the sleeve slides over it. The synchro ring, which is usually made of a friction material like brass, sits between the sleeve and the gear. When the driver moves the shift lever, the sleeve is pushed towards the desired gear. This action causes the synchro ring to make contact with the cone-shaped surface of the gear. Friction between the synchro ring and the gear causes their speeds to equalize. Once the speeds match, the sleeve can then slide over the teeth on the gear and the synchronizer ring, locking them together and completing the gear engagement. Modern transmissions often employ multiple sünkromehhanisms for different gear ratios.
