Sõnaühendajad, also known as conjunctions, are words that connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. They are essential for creating complex sentences and establishing relationships between different parts of a text. In Estonian grammar, sõnaühendajad play a crucial role in maintaining coherence and clarity.

There are two main types of sõnaühendajad: coordinating and subordinating. Coordinating conjunctions connect elements of equal grammatical rank, such as two nouns, two verbs, or two independent clauses. Common examples include "ja" (and), "aga" (but), and "või" (or). For instance, "Ma loen raamatut ja kuulan muusikat" (I am reading a book and listening to music) uses "ja" to connect two verbs.

Subordinating conjunctions, on the other hand, connect a dependent clause to an independent clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and relies on the independent clause for its full meaning. Examples include "kui" (if/when), "et" (that), "sest" (because), and "kuigi" (although). An example sentence is "Ma lähen välja, kui vihm järele jääb" (I will go out if the rain stops), where "kui" introduces a subordinate clause. Understanding the function of different sõnaühendajad is key to constructing grammatically correct and meaningful Estonian sentences.
