Säätöpiiri, also known as a control loop, is a fundamental concept in engineering and science that describes a system designed to maintain a desired state or output by continuously measuring the output and comparing it to a setpoint. The difference between the measured output and the setpoint, known as the error, is then used to adjust the system's input in a way that reduces this error.

The main components of a säätöpiiri typically include a sensor, which measures the output variable; a controller, which compares the measured output to the setpoint and generates a control signal; and an actuator, which receives the control signal and modifies the system's input to influence the output. For example, in a home thermostat, the sensor measures the room temperature, the controller compares it to the desired temperature, and the actuator (furnace or air conditioner) is switched on or off accordingly.

Säätöpiiri can be broadly categorized into two types: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop system, the control action is independent of the output, meaning there is no feedback mechanism. A simple toaster is an example, where the toasting time is set manually and does not adjust based on the actual browning of the toast. In contrast, a closed-loop system, also known as a feedback control system, uses the measured output to adjust the control action. This feedback makes closed-loop systems more accurate and robust to disturbances.

Common control strategies include proportional (P), integral (I), and derivative (D) control, often combined into a PID controller, which is widely used in industrial automation and many other applications to achieve precise and stable control of various processes.
