Säkerhetsskydd is a Swedish term for the set of protective security measures intended to safeguard sensitive information, assets and operations that are essential to national security. It applies to both state authorities and private entities that handle information or conduct activities whose compromise could harm national security.

The concept covers several interrelated areas. Physical security protects premises and restricts access through controls and surveillance. Information security safeguards sensitive data, including IT security, encryption and proper data classification. Personnel security addresses background checks, security clearances, confidentiality obligations and reporting of suspicious activity. A fourth area, organizational or operational security, includes risk management, incident response and continuity planning.

Implementation typically involves a protective security plan, risk assessment, training and contractual requirements in agreements between public authorities and contractors. Entities subject to säkerhetsskydd may be required to classify information, restrict access on a need-to-know basis and report security incidents to the relevant authority.

Regulatory framework: In Sweden, säkerhetsskydd is regulated by Säkerhetsskyddslagen and related ordinances, and enforced through government agencies such as the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) and the Swedish Security Service (Säpo), with oversight of both public bodies and certain private actors under government contracts. The aim is to reduce vulnerability to espionage, sabotage, terrorism, or improper disclosure and to ensure continuity of essential services.
