Säilyvyysajat refer to the designated periods during which a product, particularly food, is expected to remain safe and of acceptable quality for consumption when stored under recommended conditions. In Finland, these are commonly indicated by two types of markings: "parasta ennen" (best before) and "viimeinen käyttöpäivä" (use by).

The "parasta ennen" date signifies a quality assurance. After this date, the product may still be safe to eat, but its taste, texture, or nutritional value might have slightly diminished. Consumers are encouraged to use their senses to assess the product's condition. This date is typically found on non-perishable or semi-perishable goods such as dried pasta, canned goods, and some dairy products.

The "viimeinen käyttöpäivä" date, on the other hand, denotes a safety limit. Products marked with this date, usually highly perishable items like fresh meat, fish, and pre-prepared meals, should not be consumed after the expiry date, even if they appear and smell fine. Consuming these products beyond their "viimeinen käyttöpäivä" carries a risk of foodborne illness.
