This typically happens when the electric field strength in the medium exceeds its dielectric strength, leading to a breakdown of its insulating properties.

There are various types of electrical discharges. One common example is lightning, a large-scale natural electrical discharge that occurs during thunderstorms between electrically charged regions of a cloud or between a cloud and the ground. In laboratories and industrial settings, controlled electrical discharges are utilized in applications like welding, plasma generation, and sterilization. Sparks are a familiar, short-lived form of electrical discharge, often seen when a switch is opened or when static electricity builds up and is suddenly released. Arcs are sustained electrical discharges that occur between two electrodes, producing intense heat and light. Corona discharge is a less intense, visible discharge that occurs in a non-uniform electric field, often around high-voltage conductors.

The generation of sähköpurkaus is a complex process involving the ionization of the insulating medium. Initially, a few free electrons are present. Under the influence of a strong electric field, these electrons accelerate and collide with neutral atoms or molecules, knocking off more electrons. This cascading effect, known as an avalanche, leads to a rapid increase in the number of charge carriers and the formation of a conductive plasma channel. The visual appearance of a discharge, its intensity, and its duration depend on factors such as the voltage, the nature of the medium, and the geometry of the electrodes.
