This potential energy arises from the work done to move a unit positive charge from an infinite distance to that specific point against the electric field. The standard unit for electric potential is the volt (V), named after Alessandro Volta. A potential difference, also known as voltage, is the difference in electric potential between two points. This difference is what drives electric current through a conductor when a circuit is closed.

In simpler terms, a region with a higher electric potential has more stored energy that can be converted into kinetic energy if a charge is allowed to move from that region to a region of lower potential. This concept is crucial for understanding circuits, batteries, and the behavior of charged particles in electric fields. It is a scalar quantity, meaning it only has magnitude and no direction, unlike the electric field itself, which is a vector. The electric potential created by a point charge decreases with the square of the distance from the charge.
