Sähköpattereilla, often translated as electric radiators or electric heaters, are a common form of direct electric heating used in many homes and buildings. They convert electrical energy directly into heat. The most basic type consists of a heating element, typically a resistive wire, enclosed within a metal casing. When electricity flows through the heating element, its resistance causes it to heat up, and this heat is then transferred to the surrounding air.

There are several types of sähköpattereilla. Convection heaters work by heating the air that comes into contact with them. This warm air then rises and circulates throughout the room, creating a convection current. Oil-filled radiators, a type of sähköpattereilla, contain a heating element submerged in a thermal oil. The oil heats up and circulates within the radiator, radiating heat outwards and also warming the air through convection. Panel heaters are often wall-mounted and designed for radiant heating, warming objects and people directly in their path.

Modern sähköpattereilla often incorporate thermostats and timers for better temperature control and energy efficiency. Thermostats allow users to set a desired room temperature, and the heater will cycle on and off to maintain it. Timers enable the scheduling of heating periods, which can help reduce energy consumption by only heating when needed. While simple to install and operate, the operational cost of sähköpattereilla can be higher than other heating methods, especially in areas with expensive electricity prices, due to their direct conversion of electricity to heat, which is less efficient in terms of primary energy use compared to systems that utilize heat pumps or district heating.
