Szövetépítés, often translated as tissue engineering, is an interdisciplinary field that combines biology, chemistry, and engineering to repair, regenerate, or replace damaged or diseased tissues. The primary goal of tissue engineering is to restore normal function to biological systems. This is typically achieved by combining cells, scaffolding materials, and biochemical or physical factors.

The process usually involves seeding cells onto a biocompatible scaffold, which provides a temporary structure for cells to grow and organize into a functional tissue. Scaffolds can be made from a variety of materials, including natural polymers, synthetic polymers, or decellularized extracellular matrix. These scaffolds can be designed with specific pore sizes and architectures to mimic the natural extracellular environment and guide cell behavior.

Cells used in tissue engineering can be autologous (from the patient), allogeneic (from a donor), or stem cells, which have the potential to differentiate into various cell types. Biochemical factors, such as growth factors and cytokines, are often incorporated into the scaffold or added to the cell culture medium to stimulate cell proliferation, differentiation, and extracellular matrix production.

The engineered tissue can then be implanted into the patient, where it integrates with the surrounding host tissue and eventually replaces the damaged or diseased area. Tissue engineering holds promise for treating a wide range of conditions, including organ failure, bone defects, and skin injuries. Ongoing research focuses on developing more sophisticated scaffolds, improving cell delivery methods, and creating more complex tissues and organs.
