Színellentétek, or color contrasts, refer to the way colors interact with each other to create distinct visual effects. The perception of color is not absolute but is influenced by the surrounding colors. Different types of color contrasts exist, each with a unique impact on the viewer.

One of the most fundamental types is the contrast between complementary colors. Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out (lose hue) by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest possible contrast, making each color appear more vibrant and intense. For example, red and green, blue and orange, and yellow and violet are complementary pairs.

Another important contrast is that of warm and cool colors. Warm colors, such as reds, oranges, and yellows, tend to advance visually and evoke feelings of energy and warmth. Cool colors, like blues, greens, and violets, tend to recede and create a sense of calmness and spaciousness. Placing warm and cool colors side-by-side can create a dynamic visual tension.

Other color contrasts include light-dark contrast, where the difference in brightness between colors is emphasized, and simultaneous contrast, where the perception of a color is affected by the color directly adjacent to it, often making it appear more extreme. These principles are widely used in art, design, and photography to create visual interest, guide the viewer's eye, and convey specific emotions or moods. Understanding color contrasts is crucial for effective visual communication.
