Szénsavbázisok, more commonly referred to as carbonates, are chemical compounds derived from carbonic acid. Carbonic acid itself is a weak acid with the chemical formula H2CO3. When carbonic acid loses one or more hydrogen ions (protons), it forms carbonate anions. The most common carbonate anion is CO3^2-, which is the anion of carbonic acid. However, carbonic acid can also lose just one proton to form the bicarbonate or hydrogen carbonate anion, HCO3^-.

These anions are fundamental components of many minerals and geological formations. For instance, calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is the primary constituent of rocks like limestone, marble, and chalk. It is also the main building block of shells and skeletons in marine organisms such as corals and mollusks. Magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) is found in minerals like magnesite. Dolomite, a common rock-forming mineral, is a carbonate mineral composed of calcium and magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3)2.

Carbonate compounds play crucial roles in various natural processes and industrial applications. The Earth's carbon cycle involves the exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms, with carbonates being a significant reservoir of carbon. In industrial settings, calcium carbonate is used extensively in the production of cement, as a filler in plastics and paper, and as a dietary supplement. Bicarbonates, such as sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, baking soda), are widely used as leavening agents in baking, as antacids, and in cleaning products due to their mild alkaline properties.
