Szándéktremor, also known as intention tremor, is a type of tremor that occurs during voluntary movement. It is characterized by a rhythmic, oscillating movement that becomes more pronounced as a person attempts to reach a specific target. This tremor is not present at rest but emerges when the individual tries to perform a purposeful action, such as picking up an object, writing, or pointing.

The severity of szándéktremor typically increases as the limb approaches its target, leading to difficulties with fine motor tasks. This type of tremor is often associated with damage or dysfunction in the cerebellum, a part of the brain responsible for coordinating voluntary movements. Conditions that can cause szándéktremor include multiple sclerosis, stroke, certain genetic disorders, and alcohol-related neurological damage.

Diagnosis usually involves a neurological examination where the physician observes the tremor during specific tasks. Imaging techniques like MRI may be used to identify underlying brain abnormalities. Treatment strategies aim to manage the underlying cause and reduce tremor severity. Medications, such as beta-blockers or anticonvulsants, can sometimes help alleviate the symptoms. In some cases, physical or occupational therapy may be beneficial to improve motor control and adapt to the tremor. Surgical interventions are rarely considered and are reserved for severe, intractable cases.
