Szinkronizátorok, in English synchronizers, are essential components in mechanical systems, particularly in gearboxes. Their primary function is to ensure that the gears involved in a shift are rotating at the same speed before they engage. This synchronization prevents the jarring and grinding that would otherwise occur if gears with different rotational velocities were forced together.

The operation of a synchronizer typically involves a sleeve, a hub, and a blocker ring, often made of a friction material like brass or bronze. When the driver moves the gear lever, the sleeve slides towards the desired gear. This movement first brings the blocker ring into contact with the teeth of the gear that is about to be selected. The friction between the blocker ring and the gear causes the gear to speed up or slow down until its rotational speed matches that of the synchronizer hub, which is connected to the input shaft. Once synchronization is achieved, the sleeve continues its movement, sliding over the blocker ring and engaging the gear.

Synchronizers are crucial for smooth and efficient gear changes in manual transmissions found in automobiles, motorcycles, and many other vehicles. They enable drivers to shift gears quickly and without damaging the transmission components. Without them, shifting gears would be a much more difficult and destructive process.
