The "személykód" is a unique identification number used in Hungary. It is assigned to every Hungarian citizen and permanent resident. The system was introduced in 1989, replacing the previous identification number system. The primary purpose of the személykód is to facilitate administrative processes and ensure accurate personal identification for various services, including healthcare, social security, and taxation.

The structure of the személykód is standardized. It consists of a ten-digit number. The first eight digits represent the date of birth in the format YYYYMMDD. The ninth digit indicates gender, with odd numbers for males and even numbers for females. The final tenth digit is a control digit, calculated using a specific algorithm to ensure the validity of the entire number. This control digit helps prevent errors and fraudulent use of the identification number.
