Szekcionálók, often translated as "sectionalizers," are electrical distribution devices used in power grids. Their primary function is to automatically isolate sections of a circuit that have experienced a fault, such as a short circuit. This isolation helps to limit the extent of the outage, preventing it from spreading to unaffected parts of the network. By segmenting the distribution line, sectionalizers allow for a more targeted response to electrical disturbances.

These devices typically operate in conjunction with fuses or other protective relays. When a fault occurs, the upstream protective device, like a circuit breaker or fuse, interrupts the current. However, this initial interruption may not always be sufficient to clear the fault if it is a temporary or transient issue. In such cases, the fault current may continue to flow. A sectionalizer monitors this current. If the current exceeds a predetermined threshold for a specific duration, indicating a persistent fault, the sectionalizer will then operate to open its internal contacts. This action effectively disconnects the faulted section from the rest of the circuit.

The benefit of using sectionalizers lies in their ability to reduce the number of customers affected by an outage. By quickly isolating the problematic segment, power can be restored to the majority of users while fault finding and repair efforts are concentrated on the smaller, isolated section. This improves overall grid reliability and reduces the economic impact of widespread power interruptions. They are particularly useful in overhead distribution lines where faults like fallen branches or tree contact are common and can be transient.
