Szagérzékelési refers to the biological process by which an organism detects and responds to airborne chemical compounds, commonly known as smells or odors. This sense is crucial for survival, playing roles in finding food, avoiding danger, communication, and reproduction. In humans and many other animals, olfactory perception begins when odor molecules enter the nasal cavity. These molecules then dissolve in the mucus lining the olfactory epithelium, a specialized tissue located in the upper part of the nasal cavity.

Within the olfactory epithelium are millions of olfactory receptor neurons. Each neuron possesses specialized cilia that extend into the mucus layer, studded with olfactory receptors. These receptors are proteins that bind to specific odor molecules. When an odor molecule binds to its corresponding receptor, it triggers a signal transduction pathway within the neuron, ultimately generating an electrical impulse.

These electrical impulses are then transmitted along the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb, a structure located at the base of the brain. The olfactory bulb processes the incoming signals and relays them to other parts of the brain, including the piriform cortex, which is responsible for identifying and consciously perceiving smells, and the amygdala, which is involved in emotional responses associated with odors. The complex interplay between these brain regions allows for the interpretation of a vast array of smells and the associated memories and emotions.
