Syöpälääke is the Finnish term for a medication used to treat cancer. These drugs, also known as anticancer drugs or chemotherapeutic agents, work by targeting and killing rapidly dividing cells, which is a characteristic of cancer cells. However, they can also affect healthy, rapidly dividing cells in the body, leading to side effects.

There are several classes of syöpälääkkeet, each with a different mechanism of action. Alkylating agents, for example, damage cancer cell DNA, preventing them from replicating. Antimetabolites interfere with the normal metabolic processes that cancer cells need to grow. Antibiotics like anthracyclines work by intercalating into DNA or inhibiting enzymes crucial for DNA replication. Topoisomerase inhibitors block enzymes that help unwind DNA, leading to cell death. Finally, mitotic inhibitors interfere with the cell division process itself.
