Syyttämisprosessi, known in English as the indictment process or prosecution process, refers to the legal procedures involved in formally accusing a person of a crime and bringing them to trial in Finnish law. This process is a fundamental part of the criminal justice system.

The syyttämisprosessi is initiated by a prosecutor, known as a syyttäjä. Prosecutors are state officials responsible for investigating crimes and deciding whether there is sufficient evidence to bring charges against an individual. This decision is based on the findings of a police investigation. If a prosecutor determines that a crime has likely been committed and there is enough evidence to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, they will file an indictment, or syyte, with the court.

The indictment outlines the specific charges against the accused, the legal basis for these charges, and the evidence that will be presented. Once the indictment is filed, the case proceeds to the court. The accused then has the opportunity to respond to the charges. The subsequent stages of the legal proceedings, including the trial, are governed by the Code of Criminal Procedure (rikoslaki).
