Syvämeren is a Finnish word that translates to "deep sea" in English. It refers to the vast, deep regions of the world's oceans that lie beyond the continental shelf and are typically characterized by extreme pressure, low temperatures, and minimal light. The deep sea is often divided into two main zones: the bathypelagic zone, which extends from about 400 to 4,000 meters (1,300 to 13,000 feet) below the surface, and the abyssopelagic zone, which lies between 4,000 and 6,000 meters (13,000 to 20,000 feet) below the surface. The deepest parts of the ocean are found in the Mariana Trench, which reaches a maximum known depth of approximately 10,928 meters (35,853 feet) at the Challenger Deep.
