Approaches include lift-and-shift, replatforming, and refactoring, with big-bang or phased cutover and continuous replication for minimal downtime.

Planning typically involves discovery and assessment, dependency mapping, selecting target architecture, risk and compliance review, data migration plan, and testing. The implementation phase uses a runbook, pilots, migration waves or cutover, monitoring, and a rollback option.

Post-migration tasks include validating data integrity and functionality, tuning performance, decommissioning legacy systems, updating documentation, and training users. Security and governance considerations cover data protection during transfer (encryption in transit and at rest), access controls, and regulatory compliance.
