Sysselsättningssektorer refer to the broad categories within an economy where individuals are employed. These sectors are typically classified based on the type of economic activity undertaken. The most common and widely recognized classification divides the economy into three primary sectors: the primary sector, the secondary sector, and the tertiary sector.

The primary sector encompasses industries directly involved in the extraction and production of raw materials. This includes agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, and quarrying. Economies with a high proportion of employment in the primary sector are often considered less developed, though exceptions exist, particularly in resource-rich nations.

The secondary sector, also known as the industrial sector, involves the transformation of raw materials into manufactured goods. This includes manufacturing, construction, and processing industries. As economies develop, there is often a shift of employment from the primary to the secondary sector.

The tertiary sector, or service sector, comprises industries that provide services rather than tangible goods. This is the largest and fastest-growing sector in most developed economies. It includes a wide range of activities such as retail, transportation, healthcare, education, finance, hospitality, and information technology. Within the tertiary sector, further subdivisions are often made, such as the quaternary sector (knowledge-based services like research and development) and the quinary sector (high-level decision-making). Analyzing the distribution of employment across these sectors provides insights into an economy's structure, development stage, and productivity.
